2023 Hitch Hotel - Review
This last August we took delivery of our Hitch Hotel collapsible camping trailer. We'd been looking for a teardrop trailer that would fit in our garage, but nothing really met our requirements, so we decided to look at some alternatives that were out there and came across an innovative startup company that had come up with a really clever design.
The Hitch Hotel is a hard sided camper trailer that collapses into a tiny footprint so that it can be stored anywhere you have a few square feet of storage space.
The design is really innovative - when storing the unit, you can take the front cargo box off, put it inside the trailer, and then fold the trailer hitch vertically so that the whole unit only takes up a little over 18 square feet. It's perfect for people that live in an HOA where you might not be allowed to park a trailer in your driveway, or in an apartment complex where all you'd need to do is rent a second parking space (usually a lot cheaper than dealing with one of those RV storage places).
When you're ready to go camping, you just lower the hitch and reinstall the cargo box and you're good to go:
The whole unit is only around 920 pounds, and can be towed easily behind anything from a truck to a compact car. And best of all, it has really high clearance and an independent suspension that makes it really easy to tow it on rough terrain where some teardrop trailers might have a hard time.
The trailer is so light you don't even notice it when you're driving and it barely affects your gas mileage. It's great to be able to zip along at 80 MPH across Texas and not having to worry about it really affecting fuel economy or having to fight to stay in your lane if its windy out.
When you get to your destination you just unhitch the trailer and extend it open and you now have a nice hard-sided and well insulated place to sleep. When fully extended, there's enough room inside for a Queen sized mattress.
The Hitch Hotel is built like a tank - with insulated double-walled fiberglass, and has ducting built into it so that you can install a heater or air-conditioner depending on the weather you're going to be camping in.
One of the really nice things about the Hitch Hotel is that the rear door opens upward, which makes it really easy to attach an SUV tent to it. This really gives you the best of both worlds - and keeps insects from getting in when you open or close the door at night.
The Hitch Hotel works great with SUV tents
Another great thing about the Hitch Hotel is the cargo box, which has lots of room for storing extra gear, batteries, an air-conditioner or heater, or whatever else you want to drag along with you to your camping spot.
Overall, the Hitch Hotel is the perfect solution if you don't have a lot of storage space for a larger trailer, or if you just like traveling light and don't want to be bogged down dragging a huge trailer behind you.
We've had an absolute blast going camping with the Hitch Hotel and are looking forward to seeing their newer models that are going to have even more features, including an off-road version with larger wheels that's designed to handle rough terrain in remote areas.
